Diaper Bag Essentials

Babies are adorable mess makers, and they always keep you on your toes with surprises. Whether it’s burping, a sudden accident or drooling, anything can happen with an infant. Packing these diaper bag essentials ensures you have everything you need on hand when you’re packing for two.

Your Diaper Bag Checklist

Your diaper bag should include:

  • Diapers: When you go out, you need to find a balance between carrying a grocery store aisle's worth of diapers and running out of them. For most outings, you should pack about 10-12 in your bag. This quantity should last at least a day and will keep you in good shape. If you’re gone for a few days, of course, pack more.
  • Extra bags: Have bags for dirty diapers and all the messes babies make. Look for bags designed to keep diaper odor at bay.
  • Baby washcloths: Baby washcloths are essential because messes are inevitable. You can use washcloths to wipe up drool and spills, but you can use them for burping, too.
  • Wipes, baby lotion and powder: After you change a diaper, you’ll want products that help you keep your baby’s skin dry and comfortable.
  • Changing pad: Many of today’s diaper bags include one, but if yours lacks the item, make sure you pack a clean surface for changes on the go.
  • Extra outfits: Even if you're just heading out briefly, have at least one extra outfit in your diaper bag. An outfit change comes in handy when your baby makes a mess that wipes can’t handle. A onesie is convenient for changing your baby quickly. Depending on the season, you may also want to have extra booties, layers or a hat.
  • Feeding supplies: If you’re breastfeeding, you may want to bring a pump, breast pads and lactation cookies or bars. If you’re feeding formula, have some clean bottles and a formula dispenser with at least two water bottles ready.
  • Extras: Depending on your child’s age, you may need pacifiers, teethers, pacifier wipes, toys, extra water, snacks and blankets. Consider what items you reach for again and again over the course of a day. We recommend packing those items in your diaper bag as needed.
  • Your own items: The diaper bag is for you as much as it is for your baby. Consider storing water, your keys and snacks and some other items for yourself in the diaper bag. This way, you can avoid carrying large purses, totes or other bags besides your diaper bag.
