Hand towels are the unsung heroes of our daily lives.

Highly versatile, these medium-sized towels are an essential component of any home or business. We know the importance of a durable, high-quality hand towel. We also understand that many people have questions about the application and maintenance of these versatile cloths. We've created this small guide as an introduction to hand towels and their function, from hotel lobbies to guest restrooms.

Hand towels are unsung heroes

What Are Hand Towels Used For?

Hand towels are more than bathroom staples. They're the cloths draped over oven doors or tucked in a barista's apron. They clean a child's face after a day of playing outside and are the fabric we reach for after a long workout. Hand towels wipe down counters after we've prepared dinner, and they are the towels we offer guests when they visit. Despite their name, these towels have a wide range of uses and applications, going far beyond drying your hands.

What are hand towels used for

Hand towels are the go-to towel of any business or home, and they can be used in a variety of ways. However, you're most likely to encounter hand towels in two settings — a bathroom and a kitchen.

1. Public and Private Restrooms

Probably the most obvious place to find a hand towel is in a bathroom setting. Hand towels are the ideal size for drying your face and hands after washing, and you'll often see them discretely tucked into corners near bathroom sinks.

For businesses, purchasing hand towels can be a worthwhile investment, especially if you market as a luxury brand. Stocking your restrooms with soft hand towels shows that you care about quality, even in the details. For private bathrooms, hand towels are essential components for both convenience and hygiene — it gives guests a clear way to dry their face and hands without turning to bath towels.

2. Home and Industrial Kitchens

Hand towels are invaluable for both residential and industrial kitchens. The perfect size to clean hands and wipe down counters, quality hand towels ensure that your space is clean, inviting and efficient. For kitchen hand towels, try a darker color — since they will most likely be used to clean various surfaces, investing in dark colors helps improve the appearance and extend the life of your towels.

Wherever they're located, hand towels get a lot of use. Make sure to invest in high-quality towels that can withstand the wear and tear of daily life.

What Size Are Hand Towels?

Typically, you can tell a hand towel by its size. Smaller than a bath towel but larger than washcloths or fingertip towels, hand towels don't have much size variation. On the small end of the spectrum, hand towels can measure 15 inches wide and 25 inches long — at their largest, they are 18 inches wide and 30 inches long. The smaller size of hand towels makes them much more versatile.

What size are hand towels?

The larger types of hand towels can be more easily used in decorative folding, making them a popular choice for spas, hotels and resorts.

Why Do My Hand Towels Smell?

Few things are as frustrating as reaching for a towel and being confronted with an unpleasant, musty odor. Often, all your hand towel needs is a good wash. But sometimes, even a freshly cleaned towel retains odors. Here are some of the most common causes of bad smelling towels, as well as a few suggestions on how to deal with them.

Why do my hand towels smell?

1. Mildew

More likely than not, mildew is behind your towel's musty smell. Mildew is a type of mold that thrives in damp, humid and poorly circulated spaces. Bathrooms and kitchens are perfect places for the fungus — when we step out of the shower, we reach for our bath towel to absorb the excess water. We grab smaller towels to dry our hands and face, or even surfaces — we wipe down counters with a hand towel to wick up moisture. The towels we use for drying are continually absorbing moisture and then left to air dry. Often, not enough time passes between uses for the towel to dry out completely, which creates an ideal environment for mildew to grow.

To save mildewy towels, start a load with one to two cups of white vinegar. Run the towels and vinegar through a spinning cycle before rewashing them using regular detergent. This should be enough to take care of most mildew cases, but if the smell refuses to go away, it might be time to replace your towel.

2. Debris

Because of their high absorbency, towels naturally attract debris such as dirt, dust and sweat. Hand towels are often damp, which is a perfect setting for bacteria to thrive. Also, these types of towels are most often used in restrooms, kitchens and wellness centers, which are the dirtiest areas of homes or businesses. In fact, one study showed that coliform bacteria, which is found in feces, was present in 89 percent of kitchen towels.

The accumulation of debris can cause your towels to start giving off an odor. Try washing your towels on a hot temperature — the heat will eradicate germs and bacteria. Optimally, your water should be above 90 degrees, but 130 degrees or over is even better.

3. Detergent

Sometimes, overusing detergent can cause your towels to smell musty and old. Detergent leaves a film behind after a wash, and over time, this can build up into a layer of residue. Covering the fibers of the fabric, detergent residue makes it difficult for hot water to break down the dirt, bacteria or mildew in the towel.

If detergent is the root of your towel's smell, try using alternative soaps. Vinegar plus a half-cup of baking soda works excellently for a deep clean. Try soap nuts or berries as a natural soap — the berries are packed with a natural surfactant called saponin.

Make sure your towels can dry thoroughly after each wash — if they are bunched up, mildew can set in before they have fully dried.

How Do I Wash Hand Towels?

Regular washing is an essential part of towel maintenance. But it's easy to make washing mistakes — different items require unique temperatures, cycles and even detergents. Here are four ways to safely and effectively wash your hand towels.

1. Check the Label

Most products come with labels that include care instructions. Before washing your new towels, check the label to see what the manufacturer recommends — labels can give information on the temperature, type of cycle and kind of load that works best for your towel, along with drying suggestions.

2. Sort by Color

Especially during the first wash, sort white and colored towels into separate piles. The dyes in new towels haven't set into the fabric yet, which means they can easily transfer to other towels or pieces of clothing. To prevent color transfer, try washing your new towels with a color fixative or white vinegar — this will help keep the dyes from spreading throughout a load of laundry.

3. Determine the Cycle

The type of cycle you choose depends on what kind of towels you're washing and how dirty they are. A normal cycle has a high-speed wash and spin and is best for average cleaning. Heavy-duty cycles have a high-speed spin and a longer wash and speed agitation. The goal of a heavy-duty cycle is to eradicate as much moisture from the fabric, which makes it perfect for absorbent hand towels. If you added extra detergent to tackle heavy soils, run your towels through an extra rinse and spin cycle to reduce detergent build-up.

When you're deciding what cycle is best for your towels, check the size of your load. If the machine is only a quarter full, it is considered a small load. Not only does it require less detergent, it could also handle a lighter cycle setting and still be well-cleaned. You know you have a large load when the machine is over half-way full. With large or heavy loads, consider a heavier cycle setting to make sure every item is thoroughly cleaned.

4. Choose the Temperature

Unless the care label says otherwise, wash your new towels with warm water instead of hot for the first few cleanings. Hot water opens up the fibers of the fabric, which encourages dyes to leak. Not all towels should be washed at the same temperature — since they have little or no dye, white and light fabrics do best in hot water. Alternately, wash colors, especially dark colors, with warm water. Delicate, decorative or microfiber towels need a warm water cycle to wash out soils followed by a cold cycle to maintain the integrity of the fabric.

How Often Should I Wash Hand Towels?

Washing towels regularly not only extends their life, but it combats the musty odors that could offend customers or guests. And hand towels need to be washed more often than you think — some suggest throwing them in the washing machine every two or three days.

Because many people use them for many reasons, hand towels tend to accumulate bacteria much faster than other towels. Try to establish a towel-washing schedule, and aim to clean your hand towels once or twice a week depending on how much they're used.

How Do I Fold Hand Towels?

There is no fixed rule on how to fold hand towels. However, varying the way you show off your towels can create a pleasing effect in your business or home. Tidy, crisp folds demonstrate practicality and attention to detail while elaborate, decorative designs convey a sense of fun and uniqueness.

How do I fold hand towels

Simple Fold

Neat and uncomplicated, this simple fold looks clean and professional whether draped over a rack or stacked on a shelf.

  1. Lay towel flat with raw edge facing up.
  2. Take the bottom third of the hand towel and fold it up, towards the middle of the towel.
  3. Pull the top third of the towel towards the center, until the fold touches the bottom edge.
  4. Fold the right edge of the towel towards the left side until both edges align.

You can then drape the towel over a towel rack or store on a shelf with the folded edge facing outwards.

Pockets Fold

This pattern gives your hanging hand towels sleek pockets.

  1. Lay towel flat with the tag side facing up.
  2. Fold left edge roughly one-fourth of the way towards the right edge.
  3. Flip towel over, so the back side is facing up. Bring bottom edge up until it is one-third of the way towards the top edge.
  4. Next, take the top edge and fold down until it touches the bottom edge of the towel.
  5. Turn the folded towel so that the edge with the pocket is facing you. Take the second layer of the pocket and pull it to the right, tucking it into the first layer. Fold the left edge back over the right, and adjust until both sides lay flat.
  6. Flip the hand towel over, and hang it over a towel rack.

Instantly luxurious, this folding design gives your space a feeling of sophistication and subtle elegance. Try it out the next time you have guests.

Swan Fold

Intricate towel animals are a staple of resorts and cruise lines, and they almost always create a fun and impressive effect. You don't have to be a master of origami to create a lovely swan fold. Follow these easy steps to create a swan-folded hand towel.

  1. Lay the towel flat, with a long edge facing you.
  2. Pick up the top two corners of the towel and bring them in, towards the bottom of the towel, until they meet in the center. Since the bath towel is not a square, the corners will not touch the bottom edge of the towel — they should stop roughly two inches before the bottom edge.
  3. Starting at the far side of each outside edge, roll them in until they meet in the center. You know you have the right shape when it resembles a pointed arrow.
  4. Take the "point" of the towel and fold it back and up into a "Z" shape.
  5. Press down and squeeze the corners to create gentle curves.

Now you have a lovely, graceful swan to greet and impress your guests.
