Going to the spa is all about the experience. Certainly, people go to spas to come away with a specific outcome achieved, such as a pedicure, a haircut or a skin treatment, but this is only half the draw of a spa. The second half of the appeal lies in the experience itself. People go to spas to feel relaxed, pampered and taken care of.
An essential component of creating this experience for your guests lies in the equipment and products you choose to stock your spa with and the atmosphere you create with them. There is a long list of items included under this umbrella, but today we want to focus on just one of those items — towels.
As a spa-owner, it’s absolutely critical that you stock your spa with the softest and most luxurious towels. These towels will need to perform the same job as any towels, but even more that, they need to make a statement. They need to say, “This is a place where you can come to be taken care of and where your comfort is our highest priority. We take that responsibility seriously, right down to the towels.”
But how do you select these towels? Where do you buy them? And what do you look for when buying them? Today, we want to talk about how to purchase bulk spa towels that will help you put your best foot forward as a salon.
It goes without saying that your spa needs to have at least a few towels on hand. You’ll need them for guests to use when drying off, or perhaps to wear while they’re receiving various treatments to their hair, skin or nails. But if this was all the towels were for, any towel would get the job done.
However, that bare utility is not your only concern with towels. Yes, they’ll need to be absorbent enough to help guests dry off, but that is not their sole purpose. More than anything, these towels must be soft and gentle — helping your guests to feel like they’re indulging in the height of luxury when they visit.
The quality of your towels plays a crucial role in creating the overall experience your guests enjoy when they come to your spa. Everything from the treatments they receive, the attitude and friendliness of the staff and the equipment and atmosphere, as well as the towels, all work together to create this overall impression. That means that if even one element feels a little off, it could spoil the whole experience for guests.
Let’s say that in every way, your spa presents the perfect atmosphere for guests. Everything is absolutely right until you hand your guest their towel. The towel is coarse, threadbare and does nothing to help them dry off. It feels uncomfortable on the skin and scratches them as they dry off. This one detail has the power to leave your guests feeling that something wasn’t quite right as they walk out the door. And next time they’re looking to book a spa appointment, they might remember this lingering feeling. It might be the factor that pushes them to look for a new spa, instead of returning to yours.
If you want to your guests to already be thinking about how soon they can come back for their next visit as they walk out the door, it’s going to require attention to detail on your part. And one of those details is the spa towels.
Once you’ve realized that it’s up to you to stock your cupboards with the best premium spa towels, you’ll immediately face another challenge. What makes a towel great? What sets a towel that’s not appropriate for your spa apart from one that is, and how do you tell the difference? Let’s take a look at just a few of the qualities you’ll want to consider when choosing your spa towels.
Towels aren’t just a single uniform group of identical sizes and shapes. We all know this, as most of us have washcloths, hand towels and bath towels in our bathrooms at home. But did you know towels come in even more sizes than this? Let’s break them down:
Decide which sizes you need and how many of each size you’ll need, and let this be your guide as you start buying.
Towels come in plenty of different materials. Just a quick shopping trip or a browse through your towel retailer of choice’s website will reveal towels made of cotton, microfiber or even linen. If you’re going to buy towels for your spa, then you’ll need to make a judgment about which material you think will be best for you. We think the answer is cotton.
Why are so many spas turning to 100 percent cotton or cotton-blend fabrics for their towels? They know cotton provides exceptional value, not to mention some intrinsic qualities.
After each guest uses a towel, you’ll need to wash it to make sure it’s ready for the next guest. And if you have a steady stream of customers coming through your spa all day long, this will result in an impressive pile of towels that all need to be washed frequently. This means it’ll be important to choose towels that can hold up against these repeated washings. In other words, these towels need to be well constructed so they don’t fall apart in the wash.
Here are a few common signs of a well-constructed towel:
One of the most common ways to judge a towel is to evaluate how much it weighs. Heavy towels are almost always more fluffy and luxurious, making them a higher quality that is more pleasant to use. Light towels, on the other hand, will be thinner and absorb less liquid, making them both less effective and less enjoyable to use. It follows, then, that heavier towels tend to be more expensive while lighter towels will usually cost less.
At a glance, it might seem obvious that a spa should always choose the heavier towel since it’s necessary for spas to stock luxury towels. However, it isn’t quite this simple. Heavy towels are so good at absorbing water that they often take longer to dry. This can become a problem if you need to cycle towels in and out of the wash quickly to get them back on the floor and ready for their next use.
Light towels, on the other hand, might be less soft, but what they lack in fluffiness they often make up for in quick drying times. As a spa owner, you’ll need to balance these two needs and think about what the right level of heaviness is for a towel in your salon. By choosing towels that offer both quality and efficiency, you can gain the best of both worlds with your spa towels.
It’s no exaggeration to say that a towel’s primary function is to dry. Their very purpose is to absorb liquid and dry off wet surfaces, including everything from countertops to skin. Therefore, it’s wonderful if a towel feels soft and comfortable, but if it doesn’t absorb liquid well, then it isn’t a very good towel. This seems like a simple idea and based on the things we’ve just said about a towel’s weight, we might guess that if a towel is absorbent, it’s heavy, and if it isn’t, it’s relatively light. But the situation is more complicated than this.
To truly gain a measure of how absorbent a towel is, you’ll need to consider the number of loops it has. The greater the number of loops per square inch, the more absorbent the towel. Since “fluffiness” is how we generally refer to the number of loops a towel has in daily conversation, it’s natural that we would correlate heavy, luxurious towels with higher absorbency levels. The reverse is also true, of course, and if you find that you can easily see the base of the towel through the loops, you can usually feel sure that this towel will not offer much absorbency.
We recommend choosing double loop construction for your spa towels, as these will offer higher levels of absorbency to get your guests drier faster. Keep in mind, however, that you may want to buy several different models of towels with varying absorbency levels, since you may use a variety of towels for different purposes around the spa. Decide how many towels you want at maximum absorbency and how many you want at more of a mid-tier, and let the towel’s advertised loop-rate guide you in the right direction.
